Drum Cabinet Tips - How to Buy the Right Drum Cabinet For Your Facility
by Travis Zdrazil
Every workplace should have a drum cabinet (or more), at least if there are drums. It's amazing how something this simple can help prevent something very dangerous like industrial fires. Read on to discover what to look for when you go shopping for your own drum cabinet.
As you may know, a leading cause of workplace fires and accidents is the improper storage and handling of flammable liquids, so it makes a lot of sense to store these flammable liquids correctly!
And the way to do that is to lock them away in a place where they're safe, right?
It's the law too, of course, what with all sorts of regulations that an organization needs to comply with. There's the Occupational Safety and Administration, the Code of Federal Regulations and Uniform Fire Codes. So, if you're in charge of safety and compliance at work, it's worth your while to fully investigate the different drum cabinets available.
Look for one that's constructed from 18 gauge steel, so it's strong and secure, meets the stringent legal requirements, as well as all the Occupational Safety and Administration requirements.
You'll also have a choice between vertical or horizontal drum storage. That can be very handy when space is at a premium.
There are vertical cabinets that come in one or two drum models and include a half shelf for additional storage of things like accessories or containers.
There are also Haz-Drum cabinets, which include drum rollers for easy handling of drums. In addition, there is an optional cabinet ramp available that makes loading and unloading of drums a much easier task. For further compliance with relevant legislation and laws, each cabinet comes with large flammable and hazardous waste labels.
There's a lot more to these drum cabinets than meets the eye; that's because they've been designed to make life easier instead of harder. In fact, they also come with lots of other features like two vents with 2" threaded fittings plus fire baffle and cap.
Make sure they have large red warning labels so everyone is aware of what they are. Ground attachments also need to be included so you don't need to go out and spend more money. A three point key lock will provide added security, as will a leak proof door seal.
Every business has different needs, so it's handy that the cabinets are available to suit 55 gallon, 60 gallon, and 110 gallon sizes.
Regrettably, all too many organizations take chances with regard to safety and security, and they consequently do not comply with safety standards and fire codes. Of course, in the long run they pay the price when inspections are made or, even worse, when accidents occur.
But the solution is readily available; after all, it's just one drum cabinet away. So there really isn't a good excuse to skimp on safety.
