Musical Aptitudes by Ovidiu Iulian
There is no nation that has never known music, in either a simple of evolved form, from primitive drums to the great symphonic creations. Music always had a unanimous appreciation.
Musical aptitude is a personality feature that makes possible the successful effectuation of the musical activity. A person with a musical aptitude shows interest and inclination for music, sings, easily learns the songs he or she hears, shows the desire to know more and more about the musical domain. Talent is the development of musical aptitudes to a superior level, trough originality and creating capabilities. When a person manages to create original music, expressing profound ideas, feelings and human desires, we are in the presence of obvious musical talent. Some people remain at the stage of musical aptitudes, while others, trough intense and systematic work become true musical talents, creators.
Not any creation indicates talent, only those that distinguish themselves trough originality and depth, trough capacity to express ideas, feelings and noble desires.
What are the indications for musical talent and musical aptitudes? There has to be a specific combination of sensorial, intellectual and affective capabilities.
From a sensorial point of view a good additive acuity is required, trough which we can recognize the height of the sounds, their intensity, rhythm and armory.
The lack of perseverance leads to failure or minor creations. A good example is a case described by Revesz, who followed the evolution of a child from the age of 5 to 13. At the age of 7, the child had a remarkable hearing, being able to indicate without mistakes every note he heard, he was able to easily read music and then play it back. At the age of 8 he wrote a sonata, at 11 he held a very successful concert. However, due to lack of perseverance, his talent was lost.
Out of all the skills, musical aptitudes appear the earliest. Mozart and Hayden showed musical aptitudes at the age of 3. Mozart wrote a minuet at the age of 5, Enescu wrote "Pamantul romanesc" at 5, and at 11, he already had a rich experience as a composer. We must not forget that the greatest musical composers are not the exclusive product of born talent, but perseverant work. George Enescu used to say: "in music you need about 30% talent and 70% hard work", and the well-known Czech violinist Jan Kubelik said that only by working 18 hours a day for 20 years will you be famous, which means that hard work is the deepest source of true musical talent.
